Korean Traditional Music Club at Ewha College of Pharmacy (Chair: Kim Hye-jin, Class of 2024 / Professor Advisor: Choi Sun) held the “69th Regular Concert” on February 19th (Sat) through Centre D’Arts Sans Frontières and online streaming platforms (Zoom, YouTube).

Founded in 1955, the Korean Traditional Music Club of College of Pharmacy is the first Korean Traditional Music Club in the university to turn out more than 1,000 graduates, marking its 67th anniversary this year. About 80 students of the College of Pharmacy are currently in charge of playing Daegeum, Sogeum, Piri, Haegeum, Gayageum, Geomungo, percussion instruments, and so on.

The theme of this year’s regular concert is “礎 (Chǔ; foundation stone): In the midst of the crisis, firmly becoming the foundation stone for the future,” containing the will of the members to firmly continue the club’s history and establish a foundation once again despite the difficulties of the pandemic. Moreover, this concert was held in memory of Professor Yoon Hye-jung, who had passed away last spring. Professor Yoon, a graduate of Ewha College of Pharmacy which was the first pharmaceutical education institution in Korea, founded in 1945, served as the fourth dean of Ewha College of Pharmacy and provided full material and emotional support to the Korean Traditional Music Club.

The first part of the concert consisted of △Jeongak ensemble “Taryeong in Pyeongjo-hoesang,” △Haegeum ensemble “Seryeongsan in Yeongsanhoesang,” and △Jeongak ensemble “Suyeonjangjigok.” The second part started with a video of Professor Yoon’s life and achievement, and then the commemoration of the deceased, followed by the memorial song △“Becoming a Thousand Winds,” a Gayageum performance. For the grand finale, △Geomungo ensemble "Jeongeupsa" and △Orchestra ensemble "Chukyeonmu" (Concertmaster: Shim Mi-kyung, Class of 2022) were performed. At the end of the concert, Park Min-hee (Class of 1977), the chair of the alumni Korean Traditional Music Club “Lee So Hoe (梨韶會),” encouraged the members through a congratulatory speech, and the concert ended with an ending credit video including the practicing scene of the members.

Lee Ju-heun, a freshwoman who played Sogeum, said, “I would like to express my gratitude to all the members of Korean Traditional Music Club who worked hard to successfully finish the concert amid the difficult situation of the pandemic.

Due to COVID-19, the concert was held without an audience, but about 200 people including the performers and the audiences from the online streaming platforms (Zoom, YouTube) joined the concert, leading to more than 1,200 hits on YouTube for the day. After the concert, alumni members of Lee So Hoe had a discussion about the next 70th regular concert, and current members girded their loins for a better concert next time looking back on this concert.
