[Today’s Ewha] February 1887 / Emperor Gojong Bestows the Name ‘Ewha Haktang’

In mid-February 1887, Emperor Gojong bestowed the name “Ewha Haktang” (梨花學堂) through the Foreign Office. The granting of a school name by the government was a mark of trust in the missionary-operated institution and signified its official recognition and establishment in Korean society.
