Professor Emeritus Kwon Kyung Soo(English Language & Literature, Graduating Class of 1963)

Professor Emeritus Kwon Kyung Soo from the Division of English Language & Literature (graduating class of 1963) has made a scholarship donation to support the development of Ewha Womans University and fostering of future talent, expressing deep affection for her alma mater. Professor Kwon earned her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in English Language and Literature from Ewha and served as a faculty member for 27 years from September 1979 to 2006, dedicating herself to nurturing talent in the field of English and American literature and culture. She also held various positions, including Vice President for University Relations and Development, and made significant contributions to fundraising efforts for Ewha’s development and scholarships.

Even before this latest donation, Professor Kwon had already established the Kwon Jong-geun St. John the Baptist Scholarship in 2000, named after her father and his baptismal name, to support students studying English Language and Literature or Law each semester. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Department of English Language & Literature in 2025, she has donated an additional KRW 85 million, establishing the Jeong Kyeong-im Anastasia Scholarship named after her mother, along with the Kwon Kyung Soo Scholarship. Her total contributions to Ewha to date amount to approximately KRW 240 million.

Ewha held a fund delivery ceremony to express appreciation to Professor Kwon. Participants included her younger sister Professor Emeritus Kwon Un Soo of Keimyung University, Ewha President Eun Mee Kim, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts Hyejung Chung, Vice President for University Relations and Development Min-Jung Park, Associate Vice President for University Relations and Development Hyemi Lee, and Head of the Division of English Language & Literature Hyung-Sook Lee, as well as Professors Chan Kil Park and Hye-Won Choi from the said division. President Jeong Kyeong-suk and Vice President Kang Myeong-ok of the Ewha Alumnae Association of the Division of English Language & Literature also attended the ceremony and expressed their gratitude.

Reflecting on her student days, Professor Kwon said, “The professors I met at Ewha had just returned from studying in the United States and tended to each student with warmth and compassion, while instilling great pride in all of us with their confident leadership.” She added, “My parents were proud and delighted that I was studying English literature at Ewha, a university ahead of its time, and this donation is especially meaningful as it reflects their wish to nurture outstanding talent for the future.”

President Eun Mee Kim said, “We thank Professor Kwon for her generous scholarship donation to mark the 100th anniversary of the Division of English Language & Literature as a truly historic milestone.” She continued, “As a mentor and alumna, Professor Kwon serves as an exemplary role model, and I hope her support will empower students in the division to grow into talented individuals who will lead the times and the field of humanities.”
