“Distinguished AI Researcher” Stuart Russell Invited to Give Lecture on Artificial Intelligence, Emotion, and Humanism
A wide variety of events were held at LG Convention Hall of the International Education Building on Friday, April 16, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kim Ok-gill (1921-1990) who was a great mentor and the eighth president of Ewha.
Ewha has been hosting the Kim Ok-gill Memorial Lecture since 2001 to pay tribute to the noble spirit of Kim Ok-gill, who devoted her life to women’s education, the realization of social justice, and the provision of extraordinary educational opportunities to youths of her time. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Kim’s birth this year, a range of events were prepared, such as the production of a documentary and photo book and the opening of a photography exhibition, in addition to the memorial lecture.
In a memorial service marking the 100th anniversary of Kim’s birth, former Ewha president Chang Sang reflected on Kim Ok-gill’s devotion to Ewha and her country through anecdotes from her life in a lecture titled “Generous Feast.” Later, President Kim Eun-mee emphasized that “In the 18 years while Kim Ok-gill served as Ewha’s eighth president, Ewha not only achieved a remarkable growth in terms of its scale to be accredited as a university, but also became a world-renowned university with academic excellence.” In addition, she celebrated Kim’s teaching of sharing as a source of joy and happiness by recounting an anecdote from her posthumous book An Open Gate and a Bowl of Naengmyeon.
At 2:30 p.m. on the same day, the 18th Kim Ok-gill Memorial Lecture was held under the theme of artificial intelligence, emotion, and humanism, hosted by the Ewha Institute for the Humanities. World-renowned AI scholar Stuart Russell (professor of computer science at the University of California at Berkeley and an honorary fellow of Wadham College, Oxford) was invited as the keynote speaker for this year’s memorial lecture, speaking on the topic of “Human-compatible Artificial Intelligence.” Prof. Russell founded the Center for Human-Compatible Artificial Intelligence at UC Berkeley and co-wrote the book Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach, which is used in over 1,400 universities in 128 countries around the world as the most popular textbook in the field of artificial intelligence.
Prof. Russell’s special lecture was followed by a discussion and Q&A session, which was hosted by Prof. Kim Ae-ryung of the Ewha Institute for the Humanities, with the participation of panelists Prof. Shin Sang-kyu of the Ewha Institute for the Humanities and Prof. Nam Yang-hee of the College of Science & Industry Convergence. This year’s memorial lecture was a memorable event of sharing insights and knowledge about artificial intelligence as a core area of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, in addition the humanism emphasized by Kim Ok-gill throughout her life, which was live-streamed through Zoom and Ewha’s YouTube channel. On the same day, an opening ceremony was held for the Kim Ok-gill Memorial Hall, located near the back gate of the Ewha campus. The Kim Ok-gill Memorial Hall was originally built by Kim’s younger brother Kim Dong-gil (professor emeritus at Yonsei University) to pay tribute to Kim Ok-gill’s legacy, and has now been renovated as a place dedicated to her memory.
