2015 marks the 80th anniversary of Ewha Shinchon Campus. Ewha relocated its campus from Jeong-dong to Shinchon on Saturday, March 9th, 1935.

Ms. Lulu E. Frey, the 4th president of Ewha-haktang also celebrates her birthday on March 9th. The moving day was determined in order to commemorate the will of Ms. Frey, who set up the college courses which broadened the horizon of woman’s education in Korea.

The relocation to Shinchon symbolized more than just expanding their space. It was a bold challenge to consolidate its position as a college. Ewha Haktang located in Jeong-dong was founded as the first modern educational institute for Korean women in 1886. In 1904, initially, intermediate classes were developed, which then proceeded to ordinary classes, and finally completed with advanced courses. College courses were launched in Sept, 1910. It was elevated to Ewha College, making it the first institute of higher education for Korean women.

Moving to Shinchon campus was the result of incredible love and support from a vast amount of people around the world. Ms. Hayward Grey, a benefactor of the US, made the first movement by donating money to purchase the site for Ewha Shinchon campus. Supports from people around the world had been continued until the completion of the first women’s college in Korea.

Ewha Archives (Director : Professor Ham, DongJu) will open a special exhibition to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Shinchon Campus and commemorate the will of Ewha teachers, including but not limited to, Alice R. Appenzella and Mary F. Scranton, who devoted themselves to Ewha.
