Ewha Womans University and international chemical group Solvay have agreed to conduct joint research for the next three years to develop next-generation metal-air batteries. Solvay will provide funding worth one million euros to Ewha for the study.

After signing a cooperation and investment agreement in 2011, Ewha and Solvay have since launched three joint studies and established the Solvay R&D Center within the new University-Industry Cooperation Building at Ewha. A dedication ceremony was held for the building’s openning this past April 2.

Dr. Choy Jin-Ho, Distinguished Professor and director of the Center for Intelligent Nano-Bio Materials at Ewha, will lead a team of researchers from both organizations to develop core technologies for rechargeable zinc-air fuel cells that can replace lithium-ion batteries widely used in portable electronic devices. Te team will also try to develop hybrid materials that exhibit both highly-efficient activity and long-term durability , as well as a high-performance battery system .

Ewha anticipates that the study will prove an exemplary case of interdisciplinary cooperation between academia and industry, secure industrial property rights over results that have immediate practical application, and help solve the long-overdue problem of finding a viable source of alternative energy for future generations. The university also hopes that the joint studies and other forms of exchange with Solvay, a supporter of numerous world-renowned scientists including Marie Curie, will lead to the establishment of a system that effectively supports the research of promising women scientists at Ewha.
