merkelIn celebration of the 130th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Korea and Germany, “Traces of Power,” a photo exhibition displaying changes in German Chancellor Angela Merkel over the past 21 years, was held at the Hoyune Esther Cho Gallery in the ECC from October 15 to 25.

Co-hosted by Ewha and the Embassy of Germany in Korea, this exhibition displayed 28 photos of Angela Merkel taken by German photographer Herlinde Koelbl over 21 years from 1991 to 2012. Since Koelbl chose 15 political elites in 1991, including Gerhard Schroder and Angela Merkel, she has photographed them every year to see how their positions of power changed them.

At the exhibition, the photo of Merkel taken in her 30s when she had just entered politics, and the one taken in 2010 when Merkel was awarded an honorary doctorate from Ewha were displayed. The 28 pictures show her history as a person in power who was consecutively appointed Chancellor in 2005, 2009, and as recently as 2013. The photo taken in 2012 was particularly meaningful since it was unveiled to the world for the very first time.

The opening ceremony on October 15 was attended by President Kim Sun-Uk, Rolf Mafael, the German ambassador to Korea, and the photographer Herlinde Koelbl.
