Dr. Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Receives an Honorary Doctoral Degree in Political Science

Dr. Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany received an honorary doctoral degree in political science from Ewha Womans University on November 11, 2010 at Kimyoungui Memorial Hall.

"Dr. Angela Merkel has devoted to the stabilization and the prosperity of Germany through her leadership in conduct of her office and social activities. She also devoted in sustainable development of humankind and realization of peace through her balanced policy on energy and environment. Ewha is proud to confer honorary doctoral degree in political science to Dr. Angela Merkel", President Kim Sun-Uk said.

"I am honored to receive the honorary doctoral degree from Ewha Womans University, the frontier of female education. I will devote myself in building an open society that values community spirit and cooperation through feminine values which are what Ewha pursues", said Dr. Angela Merkel in her acceptance speech. "Korea and Germany has many qualities in common including economic development and division. I hope that Germany and Korea will cooperate in the field of politics, economy, culture, and academy and share experiences and know-hows to develop together", she added.

Dr. Angela Merkel led a grand coalition with the Christian Social Union and the Social Democratic Party of Germany from 2005 to 2009. She was also President of the European Council. She became the second woman to chair the G8, after Margaret Thatcher in 2007. Merkel is the first female Chancellor of Germany.
