Professor Ko Su-Young Developed Mass Production System for Tamiflu

Professor Ko Su-Young from Department of Chemistry and Nano Science succeeded in developing synthesis method for Tamiflu, a cure for the new flu for the first time in Korea. The new method is meaningful since it will enable us to mass-produce Tamiflu at lower price.

'Tamiflu', the only kind of medicine widely used for the cure of the new flu has had its limits due to the scarcity of its ingredient, 'Shikimicacid' that is extracted from Anisi Stellati Fructus, the local plant of China. Chemists have been searching for the ingredients to replace 'Shikimicacid' or a new synthesis method.

"We expect to produce more Tamiflu at lower cost using D-Mannitol as its ingredient. 'D-Mannitol‘ can be easily obtained and replace the 'Shikimicacid'. The synthesis method for D-Mannitol is genuinely developed in Korea. We will have the stepping-stone for domestic production after year 2016 when the patent for Tamiflu expires", professor Ko said.

The thesis 'A Synthesis of Oseltamivir(Tamiflu) Starting from D-Mannitol' was published in 'Journal of Organic Chemistry' website on September 24.
