“Toward a Socially Responsible Ewha”, First Press Conference at the President’s Office

Ewha Womans University is taking swift strides toward becoming a university with a strong sense of social responsibility, in step with the local community. At the first press conference held on September 7, President Kim Sun-Uk unveiled Ewha’s visions—Spirited Ewha, Sharing Ewha, and Global Ewha—and the key programs for her term of office.

In her speech, she quoted Cicero, who coined the phrase, “non nobis solum,” or “we are not born for ourselves alone,” and she stated that “Ewha would fulfill its social responsibility as a university based on the Christian spirit of sharing and serving.”

President Kim also announced that “the task of the new century bestowed on Ewha is to nurture global female leaders equipped with multi-cultural and multi-lingual capacities. Ewha will create a woman-friendly educational environment and grow into a global community-oriented university that will attract attention from around the world.”

To this end, Ewha will launch the Generation Grant, which offers full tuition and living expenses to socially disadvantaged women, and the Ewha Global Empowerment Program (EGEP), which assists talented women working in the public sector in developing countries.

As for the Generation Grant, President Kim said, “Government scholarships for those who are socially disadvantaged only cover tuition, but this is not enough.” She continued, “Talented students who earn Ewha scholarships and stipends will be asked to sign a non-binding agreement to donate to the scholarship fund after finding gainful employment, which will naturally create a tradition of sharing that will be passed down to future generations of students.”

As for the EGEP, she said, “Just like Mary F. Scranton, the founder of Ewha Womans University, and other missionaries, we aim to provide opportunities for higher education to women in developing countries. The EGEP is an extension of the Ewha Global Partnership Program (EGPP), which focuses on empowering women working in mid-tier leadership roles in the public sector in the third world.”

President Kim stated that communication among members is the top priority, and she pointed out that Ewha is planning to consolidate the unity of the Ewha community through a campaign in which she will personally meet 10,000 Ewha students, and through a campaign to reunite 180,000 Ewha alumnae. She also said that Ewha would contribute to the local community by introducing pro bono courses for students and faculty and by pushing ahead with a project in which all research produced at Ewha will be digitized and made available to the public.

In conclusion, President Kim presented various other programs, including the Bridge Project to provide opportunities to women whose careers were cut short after starting a family, and the Triangle Language Project designed to foster multi-lingual professionals.
