Ewha Ranks First among Korean Universities for Gender Equality in the THE World University Impact Rankings for Six Consecutive Years

Ewha ranked first among Korean universities for six years in a row in the Gender Equality category of the THE World University Impact Rankings published by the Times Higher Education (THE), a British publication of world university rankings. Ewha also ranked eighth in Korea in the categories of Climate Action as well as Affordable and Clean Energy, thereby earning recognition as a leading educational institution in building a sustainable society.

To this end, the THE World University Impact Rankings evaluate the efforts made by universities toward the 17 UN SDGs, with the social responsibilities of universities comprising key evaluation criteria. As opposed to existing evaluations that focus on the academic accomplishments and social reputation of universities, the THE World University Impact Rankings are gaining attention as the world’s first evaluation to assess universities’ contributions to sustainable global development in areas such as climate change, gender equality, and the sustainable growth and well-being of humanity.

Ewha has firmly established itself as the undisputed leader in women’s education by participating in the THE World University Impact Rankings for the second consecutive year and retaining first place among Korean universities in the Gender Equality category for six years in a row. The Gender Equality category aims to assess universities’ research performance on gender equality, ratio of high-ranking female officers, and anti-discrimination policy, serving as a yardstick for understanding universities’ social responsibilities to create a gender-equal society.

In addition, Ewha secured eighth place nationwide in the Climate Action and the Affordable and Clean Energy categories. Notably, Ewha is the first university to participate in an initiative supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), which is designed to develop climate information, communication, and early-warning systems for five Pacific Islands countries. Moreover, Ewha was selected as the best-performing university in the energy-saving category of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s green campus campaign in 2017 by consistently implementing measures to reduce carbon emissions and actively adopting environmentally-friendly energy in new constructions and renovations. Furthermore, Ewha is at the forefront of research and development for core convergence technologies, based on its recruitment of the country’s leading scholars in climate energy and environmental engineering and its establishment of the Climate Adaptation, Resilience and Sustainability Institute (CARES).
