College of Art & Design Hosts Special Exhibitions in May to Celebrate Ewha’s Founding Month
The College of Art & Design is holding special exhibitions titled “Yerim 80” and “2025 MAYDAY Exhibition,” in celebration of May, the month of Ewha’s founding.
The special exhibition titled “Yerim 80,” commemorating the 80th anniversary of the College of Art & Design, kicked off with an opening ceremony held on May 27, 2025 (Tue.) at 11 a.m. in the outdoor area in front of the Arts & Design Building A. The exhibition ran through June 1, 2025 (Sun.) at the Ewha Art Center and the first-floor lobby of the Arts & Design Building A. This exhibition was organized to reflect on the past 80 years of the College and to collectively envision the future of arts, education, and creation. All proceeds from artwork sales at the exhibition will be used to fund the construction of a new College of Art & Design building and the establishment of a contemporary art museum.
The College of Art & Design was founded under the name “Yerimwon” in 1945 and later elevated to the College of Art in 1960, establishing itself as the first institution of higher education in Korea to offer a four-year college program in the arts. The special exhibition titled “Yerim 80” is named after “Yerimwon,” the predecessor of today’s College of Art & Design, which took its first steps 80 years ago. The exhibition featured works by about 300 artists, including the College’s retired professors, current professors and lecturers, alumnae artists, and current graduate students from the master’s and doctoral programs. Showcasing and offering for sale artwork by artists from multiple generations across a variety of mediums, including painting, sculpture, installation, and video, the exhibition was designed to resonate deeply not only with members of the College of Art & Design, but also with art lovers among the public, collectors, and enthusiasts.
The student exhibition “MAYDAY” also saw its grand opening on May 29, 2025 (Tue.). Led primarily by third-year students from each major within the College of Art & Design, the exhibition provides a valuable opportunity for students to take their first steps as emerging artists. This year, over 300 students from seven majors are participating in the exhibition, presenting a wide variety of works. Exhibitions from the Division of Fine Arts, the Division of Design, and the Fiber Arts major will be held in the Arts & Design Building A, B, and C, while a separate exhibition by the Fashion Design major will take place at the ECC Daesan Gallery from June 6 (Fri.) to 14 (Sat.), 2025.
