College of Music Successfully Holds a Large-Scale Concert in Celebration of Its 100th Anniversary
On May 21, 2025 (Wed.), the College of Music at Ewha successfully held a large-scale concert at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall to commemorate its 100th anniversary. The event featured more than 300 performers, including faculty members, alumnae and current students of the College of Music, making it an extraordinary event with one of the largest numbers of participants ever recorded at the Seoul Arts Center.
The event drew a full house of over 2,000 attendees, including Chairperson Chang Myong-Sue of the Ewha Womans University Board of Trustees, President Hyang-Sook Lee, and former presidents, students, alumnae, and supporters of Ewha. Even after the performance, which lasted well over two hours, the audience remained in their seats, sharing in the emotional resonance of the College of Music’s 100th anniversary as conveyed through music.
Founded in 1925 at Ewha College as Korea’s first music department, the College of Music has stood at the forefront of change in Korean music education, taking on new challenges such as the training of professional female musicians, the establishment of Gugak (Korean traditional music) education, the formation of an orchestra ensemble, and opera productions. In March 2025, the College of Music celebrated its centennial with commemorative concerts at Lancaster Methodist Church and Carnegie Hall in New York, showcasing its presence and prestige on the global stage.
The concerts served as an occasion to reflect on the College of Music’s music education and artistic achievements over the past 100 years and to set the stage for the next century, with the participation of about 300 attendees, including faculty members, alumnae, and current students. The program offered a rich and diverse repertoire that blended classical music, traditional Korean music, and original compositions, drawing an enthusiastic response from the audience.
In addition, the 100th Anniversary Concert of the College of Music was organized as a meaningful stage to reaffirm the values of “Ewha the First, Ewha the Best.” The College of Music plans to continue its performances both internationally in countries such as Japan and the United States, and domestically in cities across Korea, including Busan and Gwangju. Through these performances, the College will reflect on its century-long musical journey, while sharing its tradition of engaging with and contributing to society through music, along with its vision for the future.
