Professor Sungjoo Hwang, a faculty member in the Department of Architectural & Urban Systems Engineering, earned his Ph.D. from Seoul National University. After serving as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan, he joined Ewha Womans University in 2017.
Currently, he leads the Urban Informatics and Intelligent Infrastructure Lab, where he and his research team explore ways to enhance the quality of life for urban residents through effective support of the built environment. His research focuses on developing solutions to ensure the safety, health, and happiness of citizens by leveraging advanced technologies such as wearable sensing, computer vision, AI (Machine Learning and Deep Learning), and spatial big data.
Ultimately, Professor Hwang aims to build smart cities equipped with systems that can continuously monitor urban environments, swiftly identify residents' discomforts, and provide immediate improvements.
