Professor Hyoung-Gul Kook is a faculty member in the Department of Architecture and has been actively engaged in a wide range of research and design activities in the field of architectural design. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering from Yonsei University and completed the Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) program at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP). Following his graduate studies, he gained professional experience in New York and became a licensed architect in the United States (AIA).
Professor Kook has been actively involved in various public architectural initiatives, serving as a Public Architect for the Seoul Metropolitan Government, a Public Architect for Seo-gu District in Incheon, and a School Architect for the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education. He has also received numerous awards through architectural competitions and invited design projects.
Expanding beyond the conventional boundaries of architecture, his work encompasses a broad spectrum of design disciplines including facade design, exhibition design, sculpture, and interior design. Through this multidisciplinary approach, he explores experimental and innovative design practices that challenge the limitations of conventional architecture.
In 2017, he received the Young Architect Award presented by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea. He was appointed General Director of the 17th Seoul Architecture Festival in 2025 and subsequently reappointed as General Director of the 18th Seoul Architecture Festival in 2026.
His publications include the books Architecture Nowadays and Architecture Nowadays 2.0.
