류석창 교수는 포항공과대학교 기계공학과를 졸업하고, 미국 Stanford 대학교 기계공학과에서 석사 및 박사학위를 취득하였다. 이후 미국 Harvard Medical School 과 Boston Children's Hospital 에서 Postdoctoral Research Fellow 를 거쳐, 미국 Texas A&M 대학교에서 조교수로 근무한 후 2019년 9월 엘텍공과대학 휴먼기계바이오공학부로 부임하였다. 주요 연구 주제는 의료 로봇과 의료기기 설계 및 제작이며, 그 외에 햅틱스, 소프트 로봇, 그리고 생체모방 로봇의 설계에도 관심을 갖고 있다. 그동안의 연구결과는 IEEE ICRA (International Conference on Robotics and Automation) 및 ISMR (International Symposium on Medical Robotics)등의 관련 학회에서 다양한 최우수논문상 후보들로 추천되어 왔으며, 2019년 현재 IEEE RA-L (Robotics and Automation Letters), ICRA, IROS (International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems) 와 IJCAS (International Journal of Control, Automation, and Systems)에서 Associate Editor 로 활동하고 있다.
