최원재 교수는 서울대학교 기계항공공학부에서 학사 및 박사학위를 취득하고, 서울대학교 기계항공공학부와 미국 메사추세츠공과대학(Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT) 기계공학부에서 박사후연구원으로 재직 후 엘텍공과대학 휴먼기계바이오공학부로 부임하였다. 세부전공은 열 및 에너지 공학이며, 온실가스 저감과 기후변화 문제해결을 위해 필요한 신재생에너지기반의 새로운 에너지시스템들을 연구하고 있다. 미래 사회 주요 에너지 중 하나로 사용될 수소, transition fuel로 사용될 천연가스, 변동성이 강한 재생전력을 저장할 수 있는 에너지저장장치가 주된 연구주제로, 연구결과는 Applied Energy, Energy 등 에너지관련 유수의 학술저널에 발표되었다.
