박형곤 교수는 현재 이화여자대학교 공과대학 전자전기공학전공 소속으로 포항공과대학교(POSTECH)에서 2004년에 학사 학위를 받았으며, 미국 University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)에서 2006년과 2008년 석사학위와 박사학위를 받았다. 2008년 미국 뉴욕 IBM T. J. Watson Research Center에서 인턴 연구원으로, 2009-2010년 스위스 로잔 연방 공과대학교(Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL)의 박사후 연구원, 2020-2021년 영국 국립 앨런튜링연구소(The Alan Turing Institute)의 연구원과 케임브리지대학(The University of Cambridge)의 방문연구원으로 국제 공동연구를 수행하였다. 박형곤 교수는 지능형 멀티에이전트 통신 및 네트워크와 관련된 다양한 공학적 문제 해결을 위하여 게임이론, 최적화이론, 인공지능/머신러닝 등의 다양한 융합적인 접근 방법을 이용한 연구를 진행 중이다. 2025년 1월 현재 180편 이상의 편집저서, 국내외 논문을 발표하였고, 다수의 국내외 특허를 출원·보유 중이다. 2004년 과학기술부 한국과학재단 해외 석박사 취득사업 장학생이었으며 2018년 한국공학교육학회의 젊은공학교육자상을 수상하였고, IEEE Senior Member, 한국통신학회 종신회원이며 한국통신학회 논문지(J-KICS) 편집장(Editor-in-Chief)으로 활동중이다.
