신다연 교수는 미국 미시간주립대학교(Michigan State University)에서 인체영양학 전공으로 석·박사학위를 취득하고, 미국 영양사(Registered Dietitian, R.D.) 자격을 보유하고 있다. 박사학위 취득 후 미국 노스다코타대학교(University of North Dakota)와 시라큐스대학교(Syracuse University)에서 조교수로 재직하며 연구와 교육 역량을 쌓았으며, 이후 인하대학교 조교수 및 부교수를 거쳐 현재 이화여자대학교 식품영양학과 부교수로 재직 중이다.
유전체, 대사체, 영양역학을 통합하는 다중오믹스 접근법을 토대로 식사패턴과 영양 상태가 유전적 소인 및 대사 표현형과 어떻게 상호작용하여 대사증후군, 제2형 당뇨, 이상지질혈증, 고요산혈증 등 다양한 만성질환 위험을 형성하고 진행시키는지를 밝히는 연구를 수행하고 있다. 다유전자 위험 점수(polygenic risk score)와 유전자-영양소 상호작용 분석을 통해 개인의 유전적 배경이 식이 반응에 미치는 영향을 탐색하며 멘델 무작위화(Mendelian randomization) 기법으로 영양소와 식품 섭취가 만성질환에 미치는 인과적 영향을 분석하고 있다. 대규모 국내외 코호트 자료를 활용한 머신러닝(machine learning) 기반 발병 예측 모델 개발을 통해 대사질환의 조기 바이오마커 발굴에도 힘쓰고 있으며 기초과학과 임상영양학을 아우르며 개인의 유전적·대사적 특성에 기반한 정밀 영양 중재 전략을 과학적으로 정립해 나가고 있다.
