김원석 교수는 화학·나노과학전공 소속 교수로 유기합성을 전공하고 있다. 유기합성에 대한 새로운 반응의 발견과 응용 및 생리활성을 가지는 천연물의 전합성에 초점을 두고 있다. 또한, 다양성-지향 합성법을 통해 다양한 라이브러리를 형성하여 함암제 및 면역억제제의 전구 물질을 찾는 연구를 진행하고 있다. 미국 펜실베니아 화학과에서 박사학위를 받았으며, 이후 엠아티공대에서 박사후과정 연구원으로 근무한 뒤, 2012년부터 이화여대에서 교수로 재직중이다.
