소효정 교수는 미국 인디애나 대학 교수체제공학(Instructional Systems Technology)과에서 박사학위를 취득하였다. 싱가포르 Nanyang Technological University의 Learning Sciences & Technologies 학과의 교수 및 아시아 지역에서 최초로 설립된 학습과학 연구소인 Learning Sciences Lab(LSL)의 초대 멤버로 연구를 시작하였다. 싱가포르 정부의 지원을 받아 Knowledge Building 및 Futureschools@Singapore와 같은 미래학교 연구를 진행하였다. 이후 포항공과대학의 창의IT융합공학과 교수로 사회과학과 디자인, 공학이 결합된 신기술 융합연구를 실시하였다. 지금까지 총 40여편의 SSCI 논문을 발표하였으며, 한국 HCI학회 최우수논문상, 이화여대 연구업적 우수상을 수상하였다. 한국연구재단, 구글 및 마이크로소프트 등 외부기관의 지원을 받아 다수의 연구 프로젝트를 진행하였으며, 유네스코 및 국제기관과 협력하여 몽골 및 인도네시아에서 국제개발 연구도 실시하였다. 저널 Learning: Research and Practice의 Associate Editor와 Educational Technology International 편집위원장으로 활동하고 있다.
