남상집 교수는 서울대학교에서 박사학위를 받고, 미국 스크립스해양연구소에서 해양천연물을 이용한 항암 및 항생제 개발 연구를 하였다. 2013년에 이화여대 화학·나노과학전공에 생화학전공교수로 부임해 재직중이다. 남상집 교수는 천연물유래 의약소재 개발 연구를 하고 있으며 현재까지 <J. Am. Chem. Soc.>, <Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. Engl.>, <Nat. Chem. Biol.>, <Org. Lett.> 등 화학관련분야 최고의 저널에 다수의 논문을 발표해 오고 있다.
