김유섭 교수는 집단/진화유전학 이론과 진화유전체학의 전문가다. 미국 로체스터대학에서 이론집단유전학으로 박사학위를 받은 후 코넬대학교와 로체스터대학에서 박사후과정, 아리조나주립대 조교수를 거쳐 현재 이화여자대학교 생명과학전공 및 에코과학부 부교수로 재직하고 있다. 주요 연구주제는 과거에 일어난 적응진화의 흔적을 현재 관찰되는 염기서열 변이로부터 찾아내는 것이다. 특히 인간의 감염질환을 일으키는 병원생물에서 일어나는 적응진화가 어떻게 일어나고 있는지을 규명하고자 한다. 이를 비롯한 여러 진화유전학적 문제들을 수학적 모델링과 유전체 분석 방법으로 연구하여 지금까지 30편이 넘는 논문을 이 분야 국제저널에 발표하였다. 현재 <Molecular Biology and Evolution>과 <BMC Evolutionary Biology>의 편집위원으로 활동하고 있다.
