서원효 교수는 약학대학(원) 약학과 소속 교수로서 다양한 외부자극으로 야기되는 급/만성 간질환의 발병 기전 및 효과적인 치료제의 개발에 대한 연구를 진행하고 있다. 경북대학교 및 University of Pretoria 수의학과에서 학사와 석사를 마친후, 한국과학기술원 의과학대학원 (KAIST, 의과학자 과정)에서 이학박사 학위를 받았다. 그 후, 미국 국립보건원 (미국 국립 알코올 남용 및 알코올 중독 연구소; NIAAA)에서 박사후 연구원 과정을 수행하였다. 그 동안 특히, 손상받은 간세포 유래의 extracellular vesicle인 exosome이 비실질세포 및 간세포와 상호작용을 통해 간질환이 더욱 촉진되며, 이를 통해 간손상의 조절 기전을 규명할수 있다는 연구 결과를 이끌어 냈으며, 이러한 결과들을 Hepatology 및 Journal of Hepatology를 비롯한 다수의 저명 국제학술지에 게재하였다.
