Dr. Seungyoun Jung, Sc.D, is an epidemiologist with specialized training and expertise in nutrition and cancer epidemiology. She received her bachelor of science degree in food science and nutrition at Seoul National University and graduated from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where she earned a master of science degree in epidemiology and a doctorate of science in nutrition and epidemiology. She was an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and is currently an Assistant Professor at the Ewha Womans University.
The primary research focus of Dr. Jung is to elucidate the role of lifestyles and their underlying mechanisms in relation to cancer development and progression. She has conducted several NIH- and foundation-funded research projects in individual cohorts and international consortia that are at the intersection of cancer epidemiology, nutrition, pathology, and biostatistics. For example, Dr. Jung assessed the association of dietary factors with biomarkers of blood and the risk of breast and colorectal tumors with specific molecular features. She also conducted studies to identify early-life dietary factors associated with breast density, a strong risk factor for breast cancer, among young women. Continuing the examination of early lifestyle factors for breast cancer, she is exploring metabolites and metabolic pathways associated with nutritional and lifestyle factors and breast density. In addition, she is expanding her interest in cancer survivorship identifying determinants of disparities in quality of life and clinical outcome at the tumor, patient, treatment, and community level.
