최정현 교수는 공과대학 환경공학과 소속 교수로 퇴적물 관리 분야 연구를 진행하고 있다. 미국 프린스턴대학교 토목환경공학과에서 「습지 침전물에서 황화물의 거동이 식물에 미치는 영향」 연구로 공학박사(Ph.D.) 학위를 마치고, 이화여자대학교 환경공학과에서 2008년부터 전임교수로 재직하면서 1) 기후변화가 토양 및 퇴적물의 물질 순환 및 오염물질 거동에 미치는 영향, 2) 퇴적물의 영향을 고려한 통합된 지표수 수질 모델 개발, 3) 차세대 원소분석방법인 LIBS(Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy, 레이저유도붕괴분광법)를 이용한 토양 오염물질 측정 기술 개발에 관한 연구를 진행하고 있다. 지금까지 국내외 학술지에 30여편의 논문(국제저명학술논문 SCI 12편, 국내 학술진흥재단등재 학술지 28편)과 다수의 국내외 학술대회발표가 있다.
