Asian Center for Women’s Studies(ACWS, Director Dr. Jung, Ji-Young) is currently gathering information from citizens for the excavation of nameless female cultural artists who were hindered in Korean modern history. The project is named to be ‘The Nameless Pioneers: Female Figures in Modern/Contemporary Culture’.

ACWS was recently selected as the Project of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism that aims to excavate and study female figures in Korean modern culture. Until December 2021, ACWS is expected to be financed with 1.2 billion Won in total. The ACWS is planning to excavate unknown female cultural artists and promote their activities to the audience. Especially women who were working behind the scenes of culture and art, who tried to pioneer a male-dominated field.

The project is designed to research through △ discovering the figures and studying their activities and achievements △ creating timeline and archiving △ production and distribution of cultural contents △ promoting special exhibitions. The center will conduct excavations and research on figures from the post-independence era to the 1990s, covering various cultural fields, including literature, music, art, sports, performance, film, dance, tourism, and media.

"Unlike a few celebrities, the project focuses on the examples of ordinary contributors who have worked in various cultural and artistic fields but have not been illuminated," said Professor Jung, who is taking charge of the project. She also added that “we look forward to accumulating new data on women's activities and establishing a foundation to study the role and contribution of women's cultural artists with a new perspective."

Therefore the ACWS plans to carry out the "My Grandmother Was OOO" project, so that normal citizens can recommend female figures around themselves. Anyone who knows about the history of their grandmothers, mothers, aunts can report. It is that many citizens could work together to light the experiences of female artists who have not been recorded in history. Once the figure excavation is completed, the research team will conduct research through literature research and in-depth interviews. The reporting period is May-July 2021, and thus you may send letters via e-mail (womenpioneer.ewha@gmail.com) including information on the informant's name, contact, and related information such as the name, achievement, and contact of the artists. Through this project, it is expected that women who had worked in various cultural fields will be newly revealed and illuminated.
