Professor Ji Hye Kim of the Department of Ceramic Art in the College of Arts and Design was awarded a ministerial commendation on December 31.

Professor Ji Hye Kim is a ceramic artist and educator, promoting Korean crafts through domestic and international exhibitions. Prof. Kim was selected as a recipient of the commendation in recognition of her contribution to nurturing human resources to vitalize the culture and craft industry by developing a program for training individual craft intermediary (craft curator, craft merchandiser, craft educate) hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and supervised by the Korea Crafts & Design Promotion Agency from 2019 to 2020.

Prof. Kim has successfully led the <Craft Intermediary Training> project with doctoral students in the Ceramic Arts major for two years. Craft intermediaries are experts who play the role of middle bridge by connecting craft producers and consumers so that the public can more easily experience and enjoy culture.

In an environment where public and policy interest in crafts is expanding and craft culture is gradually expanding, the importance of craft intermediaries is also increasing.

Recognizing the necessity of the times and developing the program optimized for the specialized field of craft intermediaries, Prof. Kim and her team have endeavored to fulfill the role as a craft culture educational institution.

Prof. Kim, who is also a supervisor of the TELOS Craft Culture Planning Track, said, “Education for training individual skills in craft trade is a point of contact with the Craft Culture Planning Track run by the Ceramic Arts Major. Providing opportunities to become craft intermediary experts by absorbing students who are seeking a path other than just the paths of artists and producers into the craft intermediary area is not only a way to expand the career of students, but also to expand the horizon of ceramic art. I look forward to it as a way to expand it.”
