Professor Sun Choi of the Department of Pharmacy is awarded the ‘3rd Chun Moon Woo Medicine and Chemistry Award’ given by the Division of Medical Chemistry of the Pharmaceutical Society of Korea. This award is given to researchers who contributed significantly to the Society by presenting outstanding research outcomes in the medicinal and chemical field last year. The award ceremony was held at the 16th Workshop of the Division of Medical Chemistry of the Pharmaceutical Society of Korea.

Professor Choi conducted innovative research that introduced theoretical biophysical methods using molecular modeling into Medicine and Pharmacy and researched the three-dimensional structure and dynamics of target protein, multi-scale simulation, and the development of inhibitors on the action mechanism study. With these studies, she published more than 100 international SCI-level papers in international journals, such as <Cell Metabolism>, <Journal of the American Chemical Society>, <Angewandte Chemie>, and <Journal of Medicinal Chemistry>. She has also made numerous domestic and international achievements, such as patent applications and new drug development technology transfer deals. Thanks to her effort, the field of ‘computer-aided new drug development’ in Korea can leap to a world-class level, and has made several exceptional achievements through joint research with leading domestic and foreign institutions of the United States, China, Japan, and Europe.

In recognition of her achievements, she was honored with the Presidential Commendation on Science Day in 2019, the ‘Nokam Academic Award’ from the Pharmaceutical Society of Korea, ‘Pharmaron Lectureship Award’ from Parmaron, a global pharmaceutical R&D company, and she was selected as the ‘Pengcheng Scholar’ from Shenzhen(深圳), the leading Chinese city of the fourth industrial revolution.

In addition, as the Department of Pharmacy of Ewha Womans University is selected as the only partner college in the country for creating an AI-aided new drug development platform, co-hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Health and Welfare, she is leading five organizations, including Seoul National University, POSTECH, KISTI, and AITRICS, an AI company to establish a platform for pharmaceutical research platform based on big data/AI and to discover new drug candidate materials. As such, she is striving to enhance Korea's science and technology competitiveness and thrive the pharmaceutical industry.

Professor Choi was selected as the best professor for her exceptional academic achievement this year in Ehwa. As the director of the recently established ‘Global AI Drug Discovery Center’, she is actively promoting research on new AI-based pharmaceutical development with her colleagues.
