In September 1883, Mrs. Lucinda Baldwin of the Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church (WFMS) designated a special missionary donation of $88 to support the women of Joseon, who were struggling against poverty, long-standing customs, and widespread disease.

Through Mrs. Baldwin’s donation, Mary F. Scranton was able to be dispatched to Joseon for the education and missionary work of Korean women. This led to the founding of Ewha Haktang, Korea’s first modern educational institution for women.

In 1886, Ewha opened its doors in a traditional hanok classroom in Jeong-dong, beginning a journey of possibility for the women of this land. From those humble beginnings, Ewha has grown beyond being Korea’s first to becoming one of the world’s leading institutions for women’s education.

Celebrating 140 years of history built upon Ewha’s spirit of sharing and service, and marked by “firsts” and innovation.

We present a defining moment that helped shape the Ewha of today.
