Ewha Womans University has received 11,000 shares of HanChem Co. Ltd. (worth approximately KRW 100 million) as a donation from Professor Emeritus Kim Sunggak at KAIST for the development of the Department of Chemistry & Nanoscience at Ewha Womans University.
Professor Emeritus Kim Sunggak joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at KAIST in 1979 and retired in 2009. Even after retirement, he continued to dedicate himself to academia and teaching future generations, such as by teaching students at Ewha Womans University as an invited professor. The donated shares in HanChem Co. Ltd., which were owned by Professor Kim, had been given to him as remuneration for joint research with the said company during his tenure at KAIST.
At the time, he led the industry-academia collaboration with HanChem Co. Ltd. as the director of the Center for Molecular Design and Synthesis Research. HanChem Co. Ltd. later grew into a company that leads the client-customized development and production of advanced chemical compounds. The company was listed on the KOSDAQ last October, earning recognition for its technologies and business viability.
Mentioning his time as an invited professor at Ewha Womans University from 2014 to 2016, Professor Kim said, “I decided to make this donation in hope of giving back this fruit of industry-academia collaboration back to a university that stands at the very frontline of education and research.” Professor Kim has been giving back to society, not only by making donations to major universities in Korea, but also funding scholarships for talented students at science high schools for the past six years.
