Ewha Womans University recently won the 23rd “Building Bridges Award” presented by the Pacific Century Institute. President Eun Mee Kim took part in the ceremony in Los Angeles, California, on February 16 where she accepted the “Building Bridges Award” on behalf of the school, students, faculty, and staff.

캐슬린 스티븐스 PCI 의장과 김은미 총장The Pacific Century Institute (PCI) is a nonprofit international organization established in the 1980s with the goal of increasing exchanges and improving relations among nations and individuals across the Pacific Rim. The institute undertakes a wide range of activities designed to promote conversations and cooperation among Pacific Rim nations, including support for Asian Studies programs at universities within the region and the supply of more than 200,000 related books. In particular, since 2000 it has been selecting people or organizations contributing to the PCI’s mission of “Building Bridges Between Countries and People” and presenting them with its “Building Bridges Award.” Ewha is the third winner from Korea following Chairman and CEO of JoongAng Media Network Hong Seok-hyun in 2016 and former Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon in 2017.

The PCI lauded Ewha as Korea’s first educational institution for women fostering girls and women with no other similar opportunities in late-Joseon Korea. Furthermore, the school established Po Goo Nyo Goan, a center for the treatment of female patients. Throughout its history, Ewha has been steadily carrying out these two critical missions of providing education and healthcare for women. The institute added that it offered Ewha its “Building Bridges Award” in deep appreciation of the institution’s mission to educate women around the world in all academic areas and train them as leaders based on Christian values of love, dedication, and sharing.

At the award ceremony in Los Angeles, President Eun Mee Kim remarked, “Ewha has produced the first women and the first female leaders in almost all fields in Korea based on its vision and 137-year history. The school is continuing to ceaselessly strive on behalf of women all over the world.” After the ceremony, president Kim visited the Rand Corporation, a world-renowned think tank, with the board of directors of the PCI and led a round table discussion on “Research for Regional and Global Challenges.”
