Ewha’s Research Labs at the Division of Brain & Cognitive Sciences Selected for the 2022 Brain Function Study and Utility Technology Development Project


Two research teams at the Division of Brain & Cognitive Sciences in Scranton College, Ewha Womans University were selected for the “2022 Brain Function Identification and Regulation Technology Development Project” promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT as part of its bio-medical technology development projects. Ewha Womans University opened the Department of Brain & Cognitive Sciences as a graduate course in 2009 and the Ewha Brain Institute in 2013, and established the Brain & Cognitive Sciences major as an undergraduate course and the first of its kind in Korea, thereby leading a new chapter in the field of brain science in a groundbreaking and creative manner in Korea. This selection once again proved the superiority of Ewha’s research activity. 

Professor Pyung Lim Han


Professor Pyung Lim Han’s team was selected for the project, “Molecular mechanisms for differential sensitivity to stress-induced depressive behavior and antidepressant action” and will subsequently receive KRW 1.65 billion in funding for the next three years 


The research team expects this research to identify the reason behind the vulnerability of the female brain to stress and depression and to enhance the understanding of gender differences in stress hormones and antidepressants such as imipramine, fluoxetine and metformin. In addition, this research is also expected to provide important clues into the growing susceptibility of women’s brains to other diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Principal Investigator and Professor Pyung Lim Han remarked, “Through this research, we are expected to gain the technological competitiveness to gain an insight into brain function by discovering biomarkers such as gender-specific genes expressed in depressives and insomniacs and proposing individualized and gender-specific treatments, which will be used for patient-tailored diagnosis and treatment intensity depression.”

Professor Jeiwon Cho’s team was also selected for the “Brain Function Identification and Regulation Technology Development Project” and will conduct a task titled “Development of novel brain stimulation technology for cognitive enhancement utilizing radiofrequency amplifying nanoparticles and neural markers of cognition-augmented animal models"


With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the importance of developing human augmentation technologies is growing, but the development of technologies to substantially augment cognitive functions remains limited. Professor Jeiwon Cho’s team will receive KRW 1.65 billion for the next three years and conduct multidisciplinary and convergent research across brain & cognitive sciences, nanoengineering and electromagnetic engineering to develop a novel scientific evidence (neural marker)-based neuromodulation techniques for cognitive augmentation. The proposed noninvasive/minimally invasive brain stimulation technique. Professor Jeiwon Cho remarked, “With the development of technologies for human cognitive argumentation, it may be possible to prepare for the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and create a new market by building an ecosystem for the human augmentation industry based on brain function regulation technology.”
