Ewha Womans University Museum Hosts the Exhibition “Communication on the Streets”

Ewha Womans University Museum was selected for the “Street Museum” project for the 2022 Museum Week hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and organized by the National Museum Foundation of Korea, and held an outdoor exhibition titled “Communication on the Streets: Utopia in Tradition and Reality Connected by Augmented Reality (AR).”

This year’s project was planned with the aims of relieving the pent-up public demand for cultural enjoyment caused by the prolonged continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic and improving the public image of museums and art galleries by presenting their main collections through the new method of combining Fourth Industrial Revolution technology under the theme of “The Power of Museums.” Ewha Womans University Museum was selected as an operating institution for the project, receiving the overall evaluation that it showcased a “program that best expressed social roles and positive influence that a museum should pursue,” and the exhibition was held until May 22 (Sun.) at ▲ Yongsan Station (The Stairs and The Garden, IPark Mall), ▲ UNICEF Plaza, World Cup Park, ▲ Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital and Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital and ▲ Korea University Anam Hospital.

The works displayed in the exhibition “Communication on the Streets: Utopia in Tradition and Reality Connected by Augmented Reality (AR)” consist of media works that combine digital technology with Ewha Womans University Museum’s collections, and the museum newly recreated its collections including “Ode to the Foundation of Peach Blossoms,” “Cranes and Peaches, “Banquet of the Immortals on Yoji Pond” and “The Scholar’s Accouterments” in collaboration with contemporary media artist Lee Ye-seung (Professor of Korea University School of Art Design). The works bear the motif of the wishes and utopian ideals of the people in the Joseon era and were recreated in AR through the “QR code graphics” installed on the plaza, hospital stairs and sidewalk surfaces, thereby mingling with everyday spaces. In addition, citizens who visited the plaza and the hospitals were able to leave behind letters conveying their wishes, which can be viewed in the AR works showcased in the front yard of the museum as part of the museum’s special exhibition “Face to Face” that opened on May 31. In addition, 2D and 3D animation works were also produced and shown on TV monitors installed in the hospitals for citizens who visited the hospitals.
