Ewha Holds Its 135th Anniversary Commemoration and Vision Proclamation Ceremony

Ewha hosted its 135th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony and proclaimed “Ewha Vision 2030+” at the Welch-Ryang Auditorium at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 31. Following last year, this year’s ceremony was livestreamed on YouTube due to the risk of spreading COVID-19. The event began with a commemorative speech by President Eun Mee Kim, followed by the official commendation for faculty members and staff in their 30th, 20th, and 10th years of employment at Ewha, and the conferment of the Pride of Ewha Award and the Ewha Academic Achievement Award.

In her speech, President Kim first reflected on the meaning of universities today and Ewha’s path. She remarked, “Ewha must go beyond simply providing educational opportunities for women in order to foster competitive female talents that stand above all other universities through the highest standard of research and innovative education,” and added, “We will reaffirm Ewha’s original calling by gaining insight into the coming era, while establishing and executing our new vision and development plans accordingly.”

To this end, President Kim added that Ewha would reinforce its research and educational capabilities through the “Frontier 10 - 10 Project,” which focuses on cultivating ten leading research fields equipped with international competitiveness and ten future-oriented challenging research areas. In addition, she expressed Ewha’s commitment to the “establishment of Korea’s first College of Artificial Intelligence for undergraduates” as part of efforts to build an innovative education platform in response to digital transformation, the establishment of “Ewha Leading-Edge Medi·Healthcare Cluster (ELEC)” that links the Ewha Sinchon Campus, Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital and Seoul Hospital, and expanded cooperation among global bio-health and pharmaceutical companies located at M-Valley Complex in Magok district, Ewha University-Industry Collaboration Foundation, and Ewha Womans University hospitals. She also emphasized that such efforts would create an environment where Ewha students will grow into creative talents.

Conferment of the “19th Pride of Ewha Award” and the “17th Ewha Academic Achievement Award”

After the commemorative speech, a conferment ceremony was held for employees including faculty members in their 30th, 20th, and 10th years of employment at Ewha, the Pride of Ewha Award, and the Ewha Academic Achievement Award. Chang Pil-wha, the first-generation women’s studies scholar and Professor Emeritus of the Department of Women’s Studies, and Choe Jae-chun, an ecologist, evolutionary biologist, and Invited Chair-Professor of the Department of Life Sciences, were selected as the recipients of the 19th Pride of Ewha Award.
