Ewha Holds Dedication Ceremony for the State-of-the-art New Engineering Building

Tuesday, September 9 (11:00am), Ewha Womans University held a dedication ceremony for its new engineering building that boasts state-of-the-art engineering infrastructure for research activities and experiments.

The 10,693 square-foot (approximately 3,200 pyong) building with five stories and three additional underground floors is designed for engineering research. A variety of cutting-edge food engineering facilities, which are located on four floors, include a constant temperature-humidity room, rooms for the testing of environmental models, pilot trials, and basic design practices, a sterile room, and a low-temperature chamber. The building also encompasses educational equipment and research facilities such as research rooms for teaching staff, an engineering library, computer rooms, and lecture rooms with novel devices as well as administrative rooms. The student welfare facilities of the new building include a cafeteria, a student association room, and free reading rooms.
Ewha President Lee Bae-yong, who attended the ceremony, said, "As the focus of engineering technologies has recently shifted to high-tech industries, women are having a far bigger say in engineering fields. The new engineering building is expected to play a role in nurturing world-class talents at a time when our engineering college is making a leap forward from the world’s first women's college of engineering to one of the global top players."
Also attending the dedication ceremony were Yoon Hoo-jung (President, the Ewha Haktang Educational Foundation, Dr. Woo Bok-hee (Director, the Ehwa Haktang Educational Foundation), Kim Soon-young (President, the Ewha Alumni Association), Yun Jong-yong (President, the National Academy of Engineering of Korea), Lee Ki-jun (President, the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies), Lee Jong-soo (President & CEO, Hyundai Engineering & Construction), and Park Gyun-ho(President, Junglim Architecture).
The new building employs a three-floor-deep sunken that introduces natural light even into the underground space. Skybridges on all floors, which tie together the building and the current engineering wing (the Asan Engineering Building), optimize connectivity while lounges located on each floor maximize space utility.
Since it was established in 1996 as the world’s first college of engineering for women only, the College of Engineering of Ewha Womans University has seen a remarkable growth and achieved major milestones: It has been selected as a BK21 (Brain Korea 21) college, the Information Technology Research Center of the Ministry of Information and Communication, and the National Research Laboratory.
The college consists of the Division of Computer and Electronic Engineering, the Division of Architecture (Architectural Engineering), and the Division of Environmental and Food Science with six departments.
