Ewha and Harvard Discuss Stronger International Cooperation

A Harvard University delegation visited Ewha Womans University on March 26, 2024 (Fri.) to discuss measures for further collaboration between Ewha and Harvard.

To this end, the delegation led by Mark C. Elliott, the Vice Provost of International Affairs at Harvard University, engaged in a meeting with President Eun Mee Kim at Pfeiffer Hall. The two discussed various ways for Ewha and Harvard Medical Schools to collaborate, highlighting the fruitful partnership between the two schools to date.

In addition, Professor Arlene Sharpe at Harvard Medical School gave a special lecture at Emerson Chapel in Case Hall on the same day at 5 p.m. The lecture was arranged as part of efforts to enhance exchanges and cooperation between Ewha and Harvard Medical Schools, as well as to offer students who are pursuing careers in biology an opportunity to learn more about research undertaken by a world-class scholar. Professor Sharpe is a Kolokotrones University Professor, the highest title bestowed by Harvard upon its distinguished professors. She is a leading immunologist who has laid the foundation for cancer immunotherapy by discovering the functions of T cell pathways, including the immunoinhibitory functions of the CTLA-4 and PD-1 pathways. Professor Sharpe’s lecture was made all the more lively by a large audience of students who filled the first and second floors of Emerson Chapel, as well as their active participation in the Q&A session afterward.

The special lecture was followed by a dinner banquet, where select Ewha faculty members with similar research interests as members of the Harvard University delegation were invited as a networking opportunity. During the event, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the partnership between Ewha and Harvard in various areas.

Ewha remains Harvard’s sole partner university in Korea. The partnership between Ewha and Harvard has continued for nearly twenty years, since the two schools co-hosted the Ewha Harvard Summer School Program in 2006 and the Ewha-Harvard Undergraduates in Asia Program (HUAP) in 2007. Throughout this partnership, the two schools have continued active exchanges in many areas, such as the Harvard-Yenching Institute Visiting Scholars Program for faculty members in the humanities and social sciences, Harvard Model Congress Asia, and a joint concert with the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra.
