ELTEC College of Engineering Selected as Nation’s First Specialized Graduate School for Convergence Analysis of Meteorological and Climate Data
The ELTEC College of Engineering was selected as the nation’s first specialized graduate school for the convergence analysis of meteorological and climate data.
The program for the specialized graduate school for the convergence analysis of meteorological and climate data was newly introduced this year by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and the Korea Meteorological Institute (KMI) to foster talented youths with the capacity to lead emerging future industries based on meteorological big data analysis. With the gradual increase in damages from weather-related disasters caused by climate change, meteorological big data analysis and utilization skills and climate change response capabilities have become more important than ever as they can directly affect a country’s future competitiveness.
In relation to this program, Ewha Womans University and the KMI have agreed to begin cooperating in fostering specialists in the field of meteorology and held an “MOU Signing Ceremony for the Specialized Graduate School Program for the Convergence Analysis of Meteorological and Climate Data” at the ECC on June 10 (Fri.). Following this selection, Ewha is expected to receive government grants and climate change response funds amounting to KRW 2.268 billion to operate the program over the next four years and seven months. Ewha will select scholarship recipients this fall semester among graduate students who are enrolled in courses related to convergence, analysis, and utilization of meteorological and climate data and participating in a university-industry cooperation program.
Ewha is planning to recruit at least 15 students each year to join the master’s and doctoral program of the specialized graduate school for the convergence analysis of meteorological and climate data in addition to the track course program, and open the graduate school this September to train master’s and doctoral students to become experts in the convergence, analysis, and utilization of meteorological and climate data. Ewha will also offer various courses, such as weather forecasting using artificial intelligence, climate modeling, and data analysis for
sustainable energy (e.g., CCUS, renewable energy, and hydrogen energy), and develop business internship programs at the school that will lead to full-time job opportunities. Furthermore, each year, Ewha will produce specialists who can consistently introduce innovations and advancements in meteorology as well as various fields of convergence studies and publish papers in international journals. Graduates of the specialized graduate school will gain in-depth knowledge that will allow them to immediately enter into various industries, including fields that require the convergence, analysis, and utilization of meteorological and climate data.
The Department of Climate and Energy Systems Engineering has been rapidly growing while conducting a variety of studies and projects since its establishment in 2016, and has since become one of the most popular majors in Korea because of its future-oriented convergence education and research that contribute to solving complex issues, such as climate change response, energy, and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) management.
