Dr. Ji-eon Lee from the Institute for Social Welfare Research (director: Jong-seol Jeon) under Ewha’s College of Social Sciences, Ph.D. candidates Sookyeong Oh and Seonkyeong Ahn (Ph.D. supervisor: Ik-joong Jeong) won the third prize at the 1st Research Paper Competition on Single-parent Families hosted by the Korea Association of Welfare Institutions for Single Parent Families. The award ceremony was held at the Korean Association of Social Welfare Centers on February 28th.


The Research Paper Competition on Single-parent Families hosted by the Korea Association of Welfare Institutions for Single Parent Families aims to facilitate various research for improving the welfare of single-parent families and people living in single-parent family welfare centers. Ten teams were shortlisted for the prizes after the first research proposal screening; among them, one team was selected for the second prize and three teams for the third prize after a thorough evaluation.


In her paper, “A Meta-analysis on Family Relationship Variables in Single-parent Families,” Dr. Ji-eon Lee analyzed the influence of positive family relationship variables in single-parent families as a whole and proposed a way to build outreaching and personalized support systems for improving the welfare of single-parent families. “The goal of my research was to propose an effective way for the state to step in for providing support to single-parent families not only financially but also psychologically and socially in these days when support for single-parent families is getting more diversified. I hope my research can contribute to improving the quality of single-parent families’ lives.” Dr. Lee said in her acceptance speech.


The team of Ph.D. candidates Oh and Ahn merged panel data on How Single-parents’ Negative Parenting Styles Affect Child Development: Focusing on the Gender Differences between Parents and Children and looked into how the types of single-parent families – such as families of father and son, father and daughter, mother and son, and mother and daughter – affects the children’s developments differently. The team proposed that services and policies for single-parent families based on child development stages should consider the type of such families.
