Ewha Womans University Korean Women's Institute (Director: Kim Eun-sil) held the 3rd "Ewha-Hyunwoo Women and Peace Academic Award Ceremony" on Dec. 19 (Fri).

"Ewha-Hyunwoo Women and Peace Academic Award Ceremony" was established in 2020 with the support of HyunWoo Cultural Foundation to encourage scholars who have contributed to expanding knowledge of Korean society and women based on women's theory and methodology. This year, authors who published meaningful books in two fields, "Academic Field" and "General Field" were selected as winners, and the judges were Professor Kim Bo-myung of Ewha Womans University, Professor Ko Jung kap-hee of Hanshin University, Executive Committee Chairman of NGA Glocal Feminism School, and Director Kim Eun-sil of the Korean Women's Institute.

So Hyun-sook, the author of Colonial Joseon Women in Divorce Court, was selected as the winner of Academic Field. This book was recognized as a solid historical study dealing with the lives of ordinary women, away from the previous New Women's research, by analyzing various divorce lawsuits during the Japanese colonial period and revealed that women in colonial Joseon never remained passive. In 2021, this book won the Youngjae academic awards for rookies as well. So Hyun-sook graduated from Hanyang University's history department, won a master's and doctorate degree from the same university, and is currently serving as an assistant professor at Dong-A University's Gender and Affect Research Institute. She has been working on reading Korean history in the 20th century from a new perspective of minorities such as women and disabilities, and continuing her study to engrave the legitimate share of unnamed people into history.

Woo Chun-hee, the author of Sesame Leaf Struggle: 1500 Days with Cambodian Migrant Workers, was selected as the winner of General Field. This book is a record of participatory research on the reality of migrant workers who migrate to rural communities in Korea and produce food, and was highly praised for introducing a new writing style while conducting activities and research at the same time. She graduated from Korea University with a degree in sociology and won a master's degree in women's studies at Ewha Womans University, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Massachusetts. This book, which was published in 2022 after conducting field research in Cambodia and Korea, was included in the Swedish Gothenburg Book Fair (2022), the Youth Day Recommendation Book (2022) by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Democratic Movement Commemorative Book List (2022). She is studying food, migrant labor, and gender based on her interest in people who feed society through labor.

Starting with the opening speech of Director Kim Eun-sil, the award ceremony was followed by a progress report, comments by the judging committee, and awarding of awards. It was also held online for the general public to participate, and lectures by the winners So Hyun-sook and Woo Chun-hee were held after the ceremony.

Since opening Korea's first women's studies class at Ewha Womans University in 1977, the Korean Women's Institute has led the study of women's studies in Korea for half a century, and has contributed to women's research by disseminating women's studies theory and methodology in each academic division. In the future, the Korean Women's Institute is expected to continue its vision for a peaceful society where women are freed from all kinds of violence through the Ewha-Hyunwoo Women and Peace Academic Award Ceremony awards and various academic research projects.
