Organized by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), the General Joint Research Support Program aims to support joint research beyond academic boundaries by attempting to converge with the science and technology sector centered on the humanities and social sciences. Essentially, this program aims to create synergy effects through convergence research in various academic fields and seek solutions to important national and social problems.

Professor Seok-Hyang Kim of North Korean Studies is leading the research team under the theme of “Construction of the First Health Management Platform of the Korean Peninsula: Guaranteeing the Health Rights of North Korean Refugees.” Professor Miyoung Kim, Konhee Kim, Hyojung Park, and Junghee Jeon of the College of Nursing, and Professor Kyunghyo Chun of Korean Studies also participate as joint researchers. Professor Sojin Lim of North Korean Studies at the University of Central Lancashire also participates as a joint researcher. Dr. Miju Kim, who works as a lecturer in North Korean Studies at Ewha Womans University, participates as well.

For the next three years, the research team will be comparing the advantages and disadvantages of the inter-Korean health care system and present a plan to develop the “First Health Management Platform of the Korean Peninsula” that focuses on the advantages of both through documentary research, in-depth interviews and Focus Group Interview (FGI) with North Korean defectors at home and abroad, and surveys of ordinary residents including North Korean defectors. Specifically, the research team aims to establish a concept of the first health management system of unified Korea and prepare a basis for unification and national health management after the unification to construct the first health management platform of the Korean Peninsula.

Furthermore, the research team aims to actively create opportunities to disseminate research, strengthen networks, and expand expertise by conducting outreach activities for Korean government organizations, public institutions, and domestic NGOs, as well as international organizations and international NGOs. In addition, by forming a convergence research system for social science researchers and health care researchers centered on North Korean studies, opportunities to contribute to the expansion of expertise in North Korean health care, North Korea, and nursing will be actively presented.
