Kang Ji-soo (Sociology, The Class of 2021), Kim Soo-hyun (Sociology, The Class of 2017), Lee Soo-bin (Communication & Media, The Class of 2017), and Lee Soo-yeon (Communication & Media, The Class of 2021), who had worked as journalists of Ewha Hakbo, the representative student newspaper of Ewha Womans University, won the excellence award at the 3rd Article Contest hosted by Hankook-Ilbo.

The title of the award-winning article is “The Wheelchair’s Tough Journey,” which is a series that consists of three articles, closely covering the issue of the right to move of the disabled. The article closely analyzes the difficulties of the disabled in wheelchairs traveling long distances, and related laws, budgets, and financial status of each city and province.

Hankook-Ilbo Article Contest began in 2020 for the purpose of accepting good articles to offer a better reading experience to their readers, and the award-winning works will be posted in Hankook-Ilbo newspaper and online news page. Hankook-Ilbo announced that nearly 50 articles were applied for this 3rd contest despite the strict conditions of having to submit three series of articles with 10,000 Korean characters in total.

Hankook-Ilbo evaluated “The Wheelchair’s Tough Journey” series as “an in-depth reporting that sharply points out the issue of the right to move of the disabled in wheelchair through the on-the-spot coverage by actually accompanying with those.” The other two winning series were won by the press team of MBC Journalism School and Semyung Graduate School of Journalism, which makes the Ewha press team the only team that consists of members from the same university.

The award ceremony was held at the head office of Hankook-Ilbo on May 18, awarding 3 million won for the excellence award. Winners will also be given additional benefits when applying as journalists for Hankook-Ilbo press in the future.

Kang Ji-soo, Kim Soo-hyun, Lee Soo-bin, and Lee Soo-yeon worked together as journalists and editorial directors at Ewha Hakbo from 2018 to 2020, gaining rich experience in covering and writing articles. "We had no fear when reporting since we’ve been writing many articles at Ewha Hakbo, and our experience as student journalists helped us a lot in setting the direction of reporting and gathering materials,” said Lee Soo-bin, adding, “Above all, we know each other’s strengths well as we’ve been working together for long, so we were able to build good teamwork.”
