Last November, undergraduate students majoring in Environmental Science and Engineering at Ewha was awarded with the Excellence Award for their work "Developing a One-Step Portable Microbial Detection Sensor" at the "9th College Student Capstone Design Competition" organized by the Korean Society of Environmental Engineers (KSEE). The ceremony was held on November 4, 2021 in Jeju Island.

Ms. Seung-won Hong(‘17), Joo-yeon Lee(‘19), Eun-hye Lee(‘19) and Jeong-eun Lee(‘21) were advised by Professor Ahjeong Son and Hyunjeong Lim the post doctoral researcher, developing a one-step biosensor analysis method that detects microbial cells and fluorescent substances in environmental samples. This analysis method is based on the quantity of genetic material possessed by microorganisms, and has excellent sensitivity and can easily and conveniently detect microorganisms. The team found the optimal buffer solution composition, and proved that the analysis method developed by comparing and analyzing the existing methods can actually be applied. The methods include ATP test, absorbance, fluorescence intensity, retention capacity of measurements, and time required for measurement. The work is expected to be useful in the field where microbial quantification results need to be quickly screened by applying it to microbial detection devices.
