At the 20th College Student Security Discussion Competition, Han Ji-seo (Political Diplomacy 19) and Jeon Eui-jin (English Education 19) of Ewha recently won the Most Excellent Prize and the Honorable Mention, respectively. The Student Security Debate for university students, jointly hosted by the Korea Military Academy and Pohang University of Science and Technology, was held to upraise future generations' interest in security issues and provide a forum for discussion. Discussion topics were presented in each of the six divisions: diplomacy, unification, military, science and technology, society, and international relations. More than 100 people who passed the preliminary round advanced to the finals and competed in a topic presentation and group discussion. Han Ji-seo and Jeon Eui-jin from Ewha participated in the diplomatic division under the theme of "The Patterns of U.S.-China Competition for Hegemony and Korea’s Reaction" and won the Chief of Army Staff Awards, which are the Grand Prize and the Honorable Mention Award.

Ms. Han, who mentioned that she was introduced to the competition while doing her internship at Ewha Politics Research Center, said that “My interest in international politics has grown by taking classes at school. In particular, the Ewha Research Institute of Politics once held a colloquium under the theme of the U.S.-China technological hegemony competition last April. So I had a chance to watch the issue with interest, and thus participated in this Security Debate Competition as it seemed to be a great opportunity for me to think more deeply about the U.S.-China relations.” Meanwhile, Ms. Jeon, an ROTC candidate, said, "I was always interested in security issues and felt the need to study. I participated in the competition at the recommendation of Professor Park Jin-ho of HOKMA College of General Education."

The award was based on special help from Professor Kim In-han of the Department of Political Science and International Relations, and Professor Park Jin-ho of Security Studies. The two professors opened a cyber campus and a group chat room for students who wanted to participate in the Debate Competition to steadily share study materials that students could refer to, and gave advice and feedback to students through continuous online virtual meetings. Ms. Han and Ms. Jeon both said that preparing for the competition together by exchanging questions with their classmates, including active guidance from professors, was very much effective in achieving excellent results in the competition.

Ms. Han Ji-seo said, through this competition, she “gained confidence and courage that I could do anything that I want if I do my best. And above all, I was able to seriously think about the direction Korea should go forth and have fun making my own logic." Also, Ms. Jeon Eui-jin said, "I am grateful for the good results in the competition, but the preparation process of the competition was more precious and memorable than the award." She added that, "I would like to express my gratitude to the classmates who helped me grow up through active discussions in all procedures."
