Professor Myung-Sun Chang of the Institute for Gender and Law, received a Prime Minister's Commendation for Gender Equal

A visiting professor, Myung-Sun Chang of the Institute for Gender and Law, received a Prime Minister's Commendation for Gender Equality Promotion of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family on August 27.


The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family declared September 1 as the anniversary commemorating gender equality, as the first Korean declaration on women's human rights was made on September 1, 1898. The Ministry has moved the Gender Equality Week from July to the first week of September from this year, and arranged several commemorative projects to reflect on the history of establishing gender equality in Korea.


On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Gender Equality Week, Professor Chang was selected as the winner for a Prime Minister’s commendation in recognition of her contribution to promoting women's human rights, spreading gender equality. Professor Chang was credited for her efforts to promote women's rights and interests in various fields, including her research on women's legislation and policy development, creating jobs for women, and creating a female-friendly environment. She was highly praised for her contributions to ‘Framework Act on Gender Equality’ and legislation for guaranteeing persons with disabilities and preventing sexual violence in schools.


Professor Chang has been a field practitioner, including a policy evaluation committee member, a policy service review committee member, a instructor, and consultant on gender impact evaluation at the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, a managing committee member at several women-related facilities. She also has lectured on gender awareness for pre-service female lawyers, gender law, law & gender, and leadership capacity enhancement. Along with professor Chang, Sung-Jong Lee, a Won Buddhism instructor, Mi-Kyung Lee, director of the Korea Sexual Violence Counseling Center, and Seok-Jin Choi, a nurse who contributed to halting the spread of COVID-19, received awards as well.


The award ceremony will be held at the "25th Anniversary of Gender Equality Week" at Post Tower in Jung-gu, Seoul, on September 2.
