The Graduate School of International Studies at Ewha was established in March 1997 to spearhead the effort to produce the finest global leaders for the 21st century. The Korean government awarded Ewha Womans University with a five-year grant to establish a GSIS that would provide the intellectual breadth and professional development necessary to successfully launch women into the international arena.
Ewha GSIS offers four concentrations in which students learn and study theory and practice (in the field) of International Trade and Investment, International Business and Finance, Development Cooperation, and International Relations. Through a well-rounded curriculum, the School aims to produce the finest global professional leaders. Furthermore, as an effort to disseminate (research in) Korean Studies and to promote understanding of globalization based on the perspective of Korean ideology and theory, Korean Studies Department from Ewha Graduate School was merged with GSIS on March 1st 2006.
The academic goal of GSIS is to produce global leaders for the 21st century - the age of globalization and information society - who can take on various assignments in the international arena and thus contributing to the development of their own nations and to train those who will lead the global expansion of Korean studies.
By emphasizing the internationalization of Korean studies, Ewha GSIS seeks to maximize the synergies created from merging Korean Studies and International Studies and strengthen its reputation as the center for training global professional leaders of East Asia. Moreover, Institute for International Trade and Cooperation at GSIS was established to conduct in-depth academic research and promote social volunteerism. IITC functions as the network hub that connects domestic and foreign academia, research and information, and it prepares students for the job market in the globalized society.
Ewha GSIS boasts an unprecedented 100% employment rate for graduates. Current GSIS graduates work in international organizations including the World Bank, UN Headquarters, WTO, and AMCHAM (American Chamber of Commerce); government and public institutes like the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Ministry of Finance and Economy, the Ministry of Planning and Budget, and the National Assembly; domestic research institutes and think tanks including KEDI (Korea Educational Development Institute), KIEP (Korea Institute for International Economic Policy), and KWDI (Korea Women's Development Institute); and multinational and domestic corporations including McKinsey and Co., IMM Asset Management, IMM Consulting Group, Arthur Anderson, SK Telecom, Korea Herald, KBS, MBN, MBC, and CBS, to name a few.
This successful result has been followed by the opening of Global Career Management Center in 2004 as an independent organization within Ewha GSIS. Since then, GCMC provides systematic support to students in search of careers. Some of graduates enter Ph.D. programs in the US, UK or other countries and enrich their academic interest and passion.
Ewha GSIS is the only school in Korea with a dual Master of International Studies degree program in conjunction with the Elliot School of International Affairs, The George Washington University (Washington, DC). After completing three semesters at Ewha GSIS and two semesters at the Elliot School, students receive two Master’s degrees in International Studies.
Ewha GSIS is the hub for training 21st century global leaders and is the strategic choice for women seeking the best education, the most dynamic atmosphere, and the greatest competitive edge any program can offer. In short, Ewha GSIS is the only program of its kind in Korea to offer exceptional leadership opportunities and courses specifically geared for women leaders. |
